Truth be told it was this abomination of a collection that made me want to start writing this blog. I first saw one of the dresses in February Vogue, and ever since it has kept making appearances all over the fashion world, rearing its ugly formed shoulders where its just not wanted! I am talking of course of the Balenciaga Spring Collection…

Not particularly a fan of bold floral prints half of the collection was never going to work for me any way but what I really have a problem with is the strange moulding around the hips, shoulders and back, the very high waist and armour like designs. I’m not 100% sure of what it is made out of but I could take a pretty good stab with polystyrene. I suppose its only saving grace are the amazing amazon inspired boots that have been produced to “match”.
Now here is the science behind it – They have taken Cristobal Balenciaga’s classic floral prints then injected the material (which by the way is taffeta not polystyrene) with stiffening latex giving the collection a 21st-century techno, sculpted look. The aim was to take fashion to the extreme and ultra-modern by adding volumes and challenging classic silhouettes…
Apparently.
