Time for a serious note I think… OK so we know models are thin, news flash right? But I was really shocked at the state of the Topshop model below. Just look at her cheek bones and sunken eyes. This isn’t sexy… -

The whole ‘waif’ or ‘Heroin Chic’ look, as it has become known, became popular in the early 90′s when people started looking less at the Claudia Schiffer’s and more at the Kate Moss’. The trend has stuck…

I could go on about the ‘size 0′ phenomenon, but come on we’ve heard it all before and quite frankly I’m bored rigid with it all! All I’m saying is that Topshop need to really take a look at what’s attractive and what’s not. Here’s a clue; Brink of death = NOT SEXY!
On a lighter note Topshop have come up with some really great dresses this season. However despite trying all of them on in a range of different sizes NONE of them suit me! Balls!

i absolutely hate that topshop model there, we have even had someone ring and complain about the posters in store so it is obviously making people feel uncomfortable!

another case of ‘herion chic’
I think wafer thin models are always going to be in the news…i partially think that maybe this is why designers tend to stick with them as there’s always going to be coverage of them, therefore even though it’s a negative manner their clothes are still on show.
To be honest i don’t think this problem is ever going to be solved…people’s tastes are constantly changing. If only we still viewed women in the way that Botticelli did!
I think Gok Wan’s How to Look Good Naked is the perfect example of what we should be doing for women now-all this model culture is not good for the self esteem of everyday healthy women.
Give me claudia over kate anyday… Who wants a girl that looks like she’s jsut shot up before you go on a date with her!
Down with sticks, bring back boobs!
Ha. Brink of death.
i like claudia schiffer..she’s hot
Pluses and minues. The waifish look emphasizes the elegance of limb length, while models like Claudia Shiffer may excel where shoulders come into play.
Where the waifs typically fail is weak shoulders, which could use some athletic noting at the very least, if not better bone structure. Claudia Schiffer-type models fail because of too much voluptuousness, and too much baggage (breasts are to large and butt is too awkwardly large) which is far elegant. The 90s were not particularly well known for taste, thus the almost humorous bulbousness.
Blend the best of both, and you have something a better. I say an athletic (toned, not stocky), slender, feminine model of elegant length is needed.
Funny someone should bring up Boticelli. What a dreadful thought! I already prefer depictions from the Middle Ages over those deformed Renaissance trolls! It sounds to me like someone is experiencing some self-esteem issues and is trying to lower the bar to feel better. Typical petty jealousy. Art should be about the highest beauty, not childish Oprah-esque resentment. Fashions change because people are exploring variety, and that’s not always going to produce things flawless.
